Daily Rink Form uses NHL schedule and game data to calculate rest, schedule density, rolling team performance and other matchup statistics.
Most statistics displayed on the site are not copied directly from a source. They are calculated by Daily Rink Form from underlying schedule, result and game-stat data.

NHL schedule data
The initial 2026–27 Daily Rink Form database was constructed from the official NHL regular-season schedule.
The schedule was checked at both the league and team level before being converted into the master game database used by the tracker.
The regular-season database contains 1,344 games involving all 32 NHL teams. Each team has 84 scheduled regular-season games.
Because schedules can change after their initial release, the live version of Daily Rink Form is intended to follow updated NHL schedule information rather than permanently relying on the original preseason schedule.
Completed-game data
Once the season begins, Daily Rink Form requires completed-game information to calculate rolling performance.
The core game record includes information such as:
- Final score
- Home team
- Away team
- Game completion status
- Regulation, overtime or shootout result
- Official shots on goal
Only completed games are included in rolling-performance calculations.
Data updates during the season
Daily Rink Form is designed to update its database automatically as NHL games are completed and schedule information changes.
The update process can check for:
- Newly completed games
- Final scores
- Official shot totals
- Game status
- Overtime or shootout results
- Postponements
- Rescheduled games
- Corrections to previously imported information
Derived statistics can then be recalculated from the updated source data.
Duplicate protection
Importing the same game multiple times should not create multiple game records.
Each NHL game is stored with identifying information that allows the importer to determine whether the game:
- Is new
- Already exists
- Has changed
- Needs to be updated
This allows repeated data checks without intentionally duplicating results.
Data validation
Daily Rink Form applies validation checks to help detect data problems.
Depending on the type of data, checks may include:
- Expected number of teams
- Duplicate games
- Missing opponents
- Home/away consistency
- Missing final scores
- Missing shot totals
- Unexpected game statuses
- Schedule changes
- Invalid or incomplete rolling windows
Automated data collection reduces manual work but does not eliminate the need for validation.
Official corrections
Game statistics can occasionally be corrected after the initial final data is published.
If an underlying value changes, Daily Rink Form can update the game record and recalculate affected derived statistics.
A correction to one game could affect:
- Last-5 statistics
- Last-10 statistics
- Last-20 statistics
- Season statistics
- Home or road splits
- Goal differential
- Shot differential
- Team leaderboards
- Schedule-condition performance
The effect continues only for calculations that include the corrected game.
Postponed or rescheduled games
Postponements and rescheduled games are particularly important because they affect more than the game itself.
When a game is moved to another date, Daily Rink Form must recalculate the surrounding schedule.
A change can alter:
- Rest days
- Rest differential
- Back-to-back status
- Three-in-four status
- Four-in-six status
- Homestand position
- Road-trip position
The original date should no longer influence those calculations once the official schedule has changed.
Statistical consistency
A major goal of Daily Rink Form is to calculate the same metric the same way throughout the site.
For example, the definition of rest differential should not change between:
- The daily matchup tracker
- Team pages
- League leaderboards
- Historical analysis
The same applies to rolling windows, points percentage, goal differential, shot differential and schedule-density metrics.

Source availability
Daily Rink Form depends on the continued availability and accuracy of its underlying data sources.
Temporary source outages or format changes may delay updates.
If data cannot be validated, displaying older confirmed information or marking a value unavailable is preferable to publishing an assumed result.
